FAQs

General Camp Questions

How long is the camp day?

The camp day begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m.   If your child rides the camp bus, the day will begin when they board the bus and end when they are returned to you.

Is Playland the right camp for my child?

YES!

Come see for yourselves! Call Directors Richard and Amanda to arrange a tour. Tours are offered by appointment 7 days a week.

What are the ages of campers?

We accept campers ages 3 to 13. Our youngest campers must be toilet trained to attend camp.

What should my children wear to camp?

Dress your child according to the weather. Camp is a very physical environment; campers should wear sneakers and socks (no sandals, open toed shoes, flip-flops, Crocs, etc.).

Raincoats, warmer clothing, and proper footwear should be worn on rainy days.

Nursery and Kindergarten campers should bring an extra set of clothes (socks, underwear, shirt and shorts) to be left at camp in case your child needs to be changed during the camp day. This extra set of clothes should be labeled and placed in a zip lock plastic bag. We will return these on their last day of camp.

What do I need to send with my child each day?

Your child’s camp bag should include two bathing suits, one towel, a plastic bag for wet suits, a sweatshirt or light jacket, and sunscreen.

Campers who wear a bathing suit under their clothes must remember to pack underwear to change into after their second swim period.

Please pack swim clothes even when the weather is threatening. Cloudy or rainy mornings often turn into sunny days.

Do I need to send my child with a water bottle?

No, but you may send a water bottle with your child if you choose. Please remember to label it with your camper’s name.

How often do you apply sunscreen?

Camp counselors will help young campers reapply sunscreen after each swim and will remind older campers to reapply sunscreen after swimming.

What do you do on rainy days?

Rainy days are a lot of fun at Playland! Every camp group has a six-period rainy day schedule. Many of our activities operate rain or shine. Special rainy day activities are added to round out the rainy day schedule.

Do you have swim instruction?

Campers swim twice each day; every swim period is a combination of instruction and free swim. The Playland pools are heated and designed for teaching. The first day your child attends camp, they will be tested to assess their skill level. This allows our certified swim staff to place your child in an appropriate swim lesson group. Our staff takes great pride in working with campers to achieve success in the pool!

Food

Do you provide lunch?

Campers bring their lunch from home 4 days a week. We provide beverages at lunch (white milk, chocolate milk, and water).

On Wednesdays, we provide a delicious cookout of hot dogs and hamburgers for the entire camp. Want to participate in cookout, but have special dietary needs? No problem! Bring us your special burgers, dogs, and buns, and we will prepare them and serve them to you.

Forgot your lunch? That's ok too. No one will go hungry at camp. We will prepare a sandwich and side for your child.

Do you provide snacks?

Yes!

Pre-k and Kindergarten campers enjoy a juice break and snack each morning.

All campers enjoy an afternoon snack of ice cream or popsicles.

Is camp nut free?

No. Camp Playland of Redding is an allergy aware facility; we provide every camp family with our food allergy policy. We ask that families adhere to the policy to make Camp safe. Visit our Health and Safety  page for more information.

Communication and Parent Involvement

How do I communicate with the camp?

Our office number is 203-438-1711.  Call anytime! During the camp season, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., your call will be answered by our office manager. If your communication is not time sensitive, you may email us at richard@campplaylandofredding.com.

Is there a visiting day for parents?

No. Parents, grandparents and others are always welcome to visit Camp Playland.  Due to a shortage of parking, we do not have a formal visiting day and invite you to visit Camp at a time that is convenient for you and your child.

Groupings

How are children placed in groups?

We group children based on their school grade.

How many staff members will be in my child’s group?

Each camp group is staffed with one Senior Counselor (teacher, coach, parent, or college-aged student) and one or more Junior Counselors (high school students). This team of counselors stays with your child’s group throughout the camp day. At every camp activity, other than our playgrounds, the group is met by one or more of our talented team of specialists, enhancing the staff to camper ratio.

Specific ratios of counselors to campers are listed at the top of every Age Group page.

How many campers will be in my child’s group?

The typical camp group consists of 12 – 18 campers.

Who teaches the activities?

Activities are planned and led by our wonderful specialist staff. Our specialists are teachers, coaches, and experienced college students trained in the area they teach at Camp.
